OpenAI assures users that these ads won't influence ChatGPT's responses and that they will not share conversation data with advertisers. The company's rationale is clear: to broaden access to its tools and reduce usage limits for more users. This is a common strategy in the tech world. However, it's also a reflection of the financial realities.

But is this sustainable?

The AI sector has been the subject of intense investment and hype, but it's yet to fully demonstrate its profitability. Some analysts believe that this 'bubble' might be unsustainable and could soon burst. This raises the question: is advertising a necessary evil, or a smart business move?

Henry Ajder, an AI expert, noted that OpenAI's exploration of ad revenue isn't surprising. OpenAI's transformation from a non-profit to a more commercial entity mirrors the evolution of the internet economy, which has largely been funded by advertising for over two decades. This shift raises ethical questions about the balance between user experience and monetization.

OpenAI isn't alone in considering this business model. In 2025, AI firm Perplexity appointed a head of advertising, though the person left after nine months. Google, however, has denied reports of bringing ads to its Gemini AI tool in 2026. This indicates a wider trend in the AI industry.
