Are you thrilled about the prospect of Android making its debut on PC? A recent leak has unveiled an exciting sneak peek into what Google has in store for its new operating system, which is set to replace ChromeOS with a fresh platform named Aluminium OS. This innovative system aims to merge the best features of its current software lineup with the versatility of Android. However, what we’ve glimpsed so far may not be exactly how Google envisioned it.
According to a report by 9to5Google, a recent bug report found on the Google Chrome Issue Tracker included two intriguing screen recordings. Within this report, there’s mention of ALOS, the upcoming operating system under development for Android, and these videos appear to originate from an HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook.
Android Authority took the initiative to upload these recordings onto YouTube, allowing viewers to catch a glimpse of both clips—at least until they potentially get taken down later. The videos reveal the operating system functioning in a split-screen setup, showcasing two Chrome windows side by side. Moreover, they hint that this is merely an early iteration of Aluminium OS, as they reference Android 16, which corresponds with the build number noted in the bug report.
Visually, the design bears a resemblance to ChromeOS, although it introduces a significant alteration: the start button has been relocated to the center of the taskbar. Additionally, there’s a taller status bar at the top of the interface, displaying battery levels, connectivity indicators, and the current time—including seconds. Notably, there’s also a Gemini icon and a pill-shaped symbol indicating that a screen recording is underway.
While these videos don’t offer a comprehensive walkthrough of the operating system, they give us promising evidence that Aluminium OS is indeed moving forward in its development, especially since it’s being operated on existing hardware.
The tech giant is anticipated to unveil more details later this year, with the head of Android hinting that further information will emerge in 2026. Many speculate that Google will choose to introduce more at its I/O event, where announcements regarding Android 17 and additional features for Gemini are expected. If Google adheres to its typical timeline from previous years, we should expect to hear significant updates come May.
