Hegseth's stance on releasing video evidence of the second strike on an alleged drug boat remains elusive. In a recent development, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faced scrutiny over the Pentagon's decision to release footage of the operation. During a Q&A session, Hegseth acknowledged the ongoing review process, emphasizing the need for thoroughness and responsibility. The incident, which occurred in early September, involved a missile attack on a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the Caribbean, resulting in the deaths of eleven individuals. The Trump administration's handling of the situation has been under intense scrutiny, particularly after the revelation of a second missile strike that took the lives of two survivors of the initial attack. The White House confirmed the second strike but denied Hegseth's involvement in ordering it. Hegseth attributed the decision to Navy Adm. Frank 'Mitch' Bradley, the head of Special Operations Command, who led the mission. This claim has sparked further debate, as congressional lawmakers were shown video evidence of the second strike and briefed by Bradley and Gen. Dan Caine. Interestingly, the initial report from the Washington Post quoted an anonymous source alleging that Hegseth verbally ordered the elimination of all individuals on the boat before the first strike. However, Hegseth vehemently denied this, describing it as 'patently ridiculous' and attributing the reporting to a deliberate attempt to create a negative image of him and his decisions. Despite the controversy, Hegseth expressed full support for the strike, stating that he would have made the same call. The two survivors were attempting to return to the boat when the second missile struck, and their actions were captured in video footage shown to lawmakers. The Pentagon's stance on releasing the video remains unclear, with Hegseth stating, 'We are reviewing it right now.' The ongoing review process highlights the complexity of the situation and the potential legal implications, as some legal experts have questioned whether the second strike constituted a war crime. The series of attacks on alleged drug-running boats in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific has resulted in the deaths of at least 87 individuals, according to Pentagon data. The Trump administration's response has been criticized for the lack of evidence presented, with only unclassified video footage released. Mr. Trump has expressed support for releasing all footage of the Sept. 2 strikes, stating that the administration will make the necessary releases. However, Hegseth's noncommittal response regarding the video release continues to raise questions and concerns.
