The term 'strategic deception' and 'geographic engineering' aptly describe this policy. The 'Yellow Line' in Gaza, introduced after the October 2025 ceasefire, is a prime example of this strategy. While officially delineating control over 200 square kilometers, physical markers were pushed beyond these limits, swallowing 54.7% of northern Gaza. This 'calculated chaos' is a means to achieve the results of an occupation without officially declaring one, a 'distribution of roles' where diplomats claim compliance while the military devours geography. The rapid territorial expansion serves as a cover for military shortcomings, a direct alternative to achieving decisive military victories. This strategy operates on four interconnected levels: security-related, political, ideological, and psychological. Holding this territory from Arab countries provides Israel with leverage to extort political concessions, while also feeding a psychological need within the Israeli public to project strength after the shock of the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears to be using these land grabs to sell a 'picture of victory' to his domestic base, as he cannot claim decisive military success. The Syrian front is a 'low-noise occupation', with no declared 'Yellow Line'. Instead, Israel has built a continuous network of fixed military outposts beyond the 1974 disengagement boundary, creating a de facto control zone of 235 square kilometers. This strategy is unsustainable, severely overstretching Israel's relatively small reserve army and pressured economy. The process is turning its geographic victories into structural attrition, a prolonged campaign of displacement and destruction enabled by the international community's lack of strict stance against it.
