Hold onto your hats, college football fans! Marcel Reed, the star quarterback who electrified Texas A&M, is returning for the 2026 season! This announcement has sent ripples of excitement throughout Aggieland and beyond.
On January 2, 2026, ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reported the news that Reed, who guided the Aggies to an impressive 11-0 start and their inaugural College Football Playoff appearance in 2025, will be back under center. Reed made the announcement on Instagram, echoing Michael Jordan's iconic "I'm back" declaration, and expressing his commitment to "finish what was started" in Aggieland.
Reed, standing at 6'1" and weighing 185 pounds, took over as Texas A&M's starting quarterback midway through the 2024 season. Last fall, he showcased his skills with 3,169 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He also contributed on the ground, rushing for 493 yards and six touchdowns.
Texas A&M even briefly launched a Heisman Trophy campaign for Reed. However, the season wasn't without its challenges. He faced struggles in the regular-season finale against Texas and the CFP first-round game against Miami, throwing a combined four interceptions without any touchdown passes. Despite these setbacks, he still managed to rank fourth in the SEC in passing yards.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Reed's return, while anticipated, sparked some speculation after the Aggies' playoff exit. LSU coach Lane Kiffin even playfully suggested on social media that Reed should join the Tigers, following a video where Reed discussed Kiffin's offer to leave Ole Miss for LSU.
Looking ahead to the 2026 season, Reed will lead an Aggies offense now under the guidance of Holmon Wiggins, who was promoted to offensive coordinator after Collin Klein's departure to Kansas State. The team will be without top wide receiver KC Concepcion, but they will welcome back wideout Mario Craver and other key players.
What do you think? Will Marcel Reed's return propel Texas A&M to new heights? Do you think the brief Heisman campaign was justified? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
