Canoe legend Oscar Chalupsky is locked in a legal battle with Discovery Health over full cancer treatment coverage, a landmark case that could set a precedent for medical schemes. The 62-year-old Capetonian, a renowned sportsman with a 12-time Molokai Challenge surfski championship under his belt, is fighting for his right to full coverage for a life-saving cancer drug, Daratumumab (Darzalex).
Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2019, Chalupsky's treatment journey has been fraught with challenges. His doctor prescribed Daratumumab due to the complications from his prior treatments and the recurrence of melanomas (skin cancers). However, Discovery Health only covered 50% of the costs, leaving Chalupsky with a substantial shortfall of nearly R300,000. This financial burden forced him to rely on friends and family for support.
With the help of the NGO Campaigning for Cancer, Chalupsky took his case to the Council for Medical Schemes, arguing that his treatment was medically justified and should be fully covered. The council agreed, ruling that Discovery Health's treatment protocol was ineffective and that Daratumumab was the correct choice. Despite this, Discovery Health refused to pay, appealing the ruling twice.
The delays in resolving the case have left Chalupsky waiting for his money back, currently seeking advanced treatment in Shanghai, China, at his own expense. He believes his public fight against Discovery Health will shed light on the struggles faced by many cancer patients who don't know their rights and often lose their battles. Chalupsky's determination to continue fighting, despite the odds, is a testament to his resilience.
