THAILAND STRIKES CAMBODIA AS PEACE DEAL FACES TEETERING BALANCE
A fresh round of border fighting erupted between Thailand and Cambodia, with Thailand launching airstrikes on Cambodian military positions after days of mounting tension. The move signals a potential derailment of the peace framework that had been championed by U.S. President Donald Trump just a couple of months earlier.
Both governments accused the other of strikes along the disputed border on Monday morning. The Thai side had already suspended progress on the ceasefire agreement, citing ongoing provocations from across the border.
A Thai military official explained that the airstrikes targeted Cambodian positions supporting armed units near the Chong An Ma Pass. The strikes were framed as retaliation for an earlier attack at Anupong Base that killed one Thai soldier and left two wounded.
Thai Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree said, “The targets were at Cambodia’s arms-supporting positions in the Chong An Ma area because those targets had used artillery and mortar launchers against Thai forces at Anupong Base.”
Cambodia’s military, in its own statement, asserted that Thai forces attacked Cambodian troops at around 5:04 a.m. local time, adding that the provocation had come after repeated Thai actions in recent days.
The Thai border situation has led to significant civilian displacement, with roughly 70% of residents in border towns evacuated. One civilian death was reported during evacuation, attributed to a pre-existing medical condition.
The two nations have a history of border skirmishes, though this latest flare-up marks one of the most serious in years. In previous weeks, both sides traded blame for hostilities and escalated rhetoric amid stalled ceasefire efforts.
