Jane Austen, an author who has captured the hearts of readers worldwide, is a fascinating figure with a unique legacy. Despite her immense popularity today, her success during her lifetime was more modest. So, what is it about Austen's work that has stood the test of time and continues to captivate audiences over 200 years later?
In 1811, a novel titled "Sense and Sensibility" was published, telling the story of two sisters and their mother. The author remained anonymous, identified only as "a lady." Little did readers know then that this lady would become one of the most celebrated writers in English literature.
"Sense and Sensibility" has since been adapted numerous times, with over 10 adaptations across various media platforms. Other Austen classics like "Pride and Prejudice" and "Emma" have also inspired countless movies, TV shows, and web series. If Austen were alive today, she would be celebrating her 250th birthday, and her fans worldwide would be celebrating with her through Regency-themed events and visits to her house museum in Hampshire, England.
But here's where it gets controversial: Austen's success during her lifetime was not as grand as it is today. Cristina Richieri Griffin, an Austen expert and assistant professor at the University of Virginia, sheds light on this. "She was not wildly successful in her own time, but she wasn't unsuccessful either," Griffin explains. "If you asked readers in the 1810s who would be remembered 200 years later, 'Sense and Sensibility' wouldn't have been their pick."
Publishing anonymously was common during Austen's time, often without indicating gender. "Sense and Sensibility" sold out its initial run of 750 copies, and a second edition followed two years later. "Pride and Prejudice," perhaps her most beloved novel, was published in 1813 and quickly became her signature work. All her subsequent books mentioned they were written by the author of "Pride and Prejudice."
Austen had some famous admirers, including the Prince Regent, who enjoyed her novels enough to dedicate "Emma" to him. However, Griffin points out that Austen's works are far better known and praised today than they were during her lifetime. So, what is it about her writing that continues to resonate with readers?
"Her focus was on the people. Even calling them 'people' instead of 'characters' is significant. They feel so real, allowing them to be transported into various places and times," Griffin explains. Austen's themes of love, family, social dynamics, and propriety are universal, appealing to audiences worldwide, including in Bollywood adaptations.
In her own language, Austen is one of the most adapted authors after Shakespeare, and her works continue to be in high demand. Netflix is producing a new "Pride and Prejudice" miniseries, and Focus Features has announced a "Sense and Sensibility" movie starring Daisy Edgar-Jones. But why do these themes and characters continue to captivate us?
"She writes about the tension between the public and private self. There's this closed-off, private individual and the willingness to open up. She's also a pioneer in certain narrative techniques, which contributes to her enduring appeal," Griffin adds.
Austen herself has become a character in various TV miniseries and movies based on her life. One reason her life continues to fascinate fans is the mystery surrounding it. Austen was famously private, and after her death, her sister Cassandra burned many of her letters.
"She died at 41, and we only have a small number of her remaining letters, so we get glimpses of her life. We imagine what her life might have been like had she lived longer, but it's incomplete," Griffin says.
Many Austen scholars and fans consider the burning of her letters a tragedy, but Griffin offers a different perspective. "I think Cassandra did her sister a service by protecting her privacy and creating this air of mystery. It leaves room for readers and filmmakers to fill in the gaps with their imaginations."
