In an exciting twist as we usher in a new year, the wrestling world has witnessed the return of a familiar face under a new moniker. Matt Cardona, previously known as Zack Ryder, made his comeback to WWE during the festive New Year's episode of "WWE SmackDown." He faced off against Kit Wilson in what turned out to be a thrilling singles match, marking his first appearance in WWE programming after a hiatus of six and a half years.
As the match commenced, Wilson took immediate action, executing a Corkscrew Elbow that gave him an early advantage. However, Cardona quickly responded with a powerful clothesline, regaining some control. Yet, Wilson’s cunning tactics soon turned the tables, as he managed to knock Cardona off the ropes, sending him crashing to the mat. The contest saw both wrestlers exchanging momentum, with Cardona nearly achieving victory through a Double Underhook Powerbomb. In a bid to counter, Wilson attempted his signature move, the Tourniquet, but was unsuccessful in securing the pinfall.
The match reached its climax when Wilson aimed for a strike in the corner but missed, creating an opening for Cardona. Seizing the moment, he executed his finishing move, the Rough Ryder, which clinched the win for him.
According to commentator Michael Cole, Cardona is now officially part of the "SmackDown" roster. Before this recent resurgence, Cardona had made several appearances across different platforms, including his match in "NXT" against Josh Briggs and participation in the "The Last Time is Now" tournament. His last stint in a WWE ring was in 2020, after which Cardona explored various independent promotions such as AEW, Impact/TNA, GCW, and ROH.
Interestingly, while he was introduced as Matt Cardona, a nod to his persona on the independent circuit, his titantron still referred to him as Ryder. Additionally, his finisher was called the Rough Ryder, although it is known as Radio Silence in the indie scene. It remains to be seen whether Cardona will continue embracing his non-WWE identity, revert back to the Zack Ryder persona, or perhaps create a unique blend of both.
